17      It Could Be You

Since we were kids, our parents always demanded that we would be one of those VIPs (very important people a.k.a. the big shots). They made sure you went to one of the best schools in town. They made sure you went to at least one private course after school. They made sure you got fed well.

However, when it comes to deciding your footpath in life, nobody can decide it for you. You have to make it yourself.

We drove into Chinatown one day. While waiting for me inside the car, my friend saw a bunch of CD ladies running around, being chased by the law enforcement. We called them ‘the CD ladies’ because everytime we passed by them, they always had CDs to sell to people — the bootleg CDs. One CD for five dollars. Three for ten dollars. Not a bad deal considering they had the latest titles most of the time. But of course, it is illegal to sell any bootleg CDs — period.

Back to where we were, thinking that their lives must have been tough to be running all over the place for their little ‘business’. We started thinking perhaps there was some kind of Chinese gangster who made sure everyone did their job. Then again, do they have a choice?

Speaking of success in life, how do you define the word ‘success’? Is it based on your career? Is it based on your title? Is it based on your status? Or is it based on your wealth?

When it comes to being successful, it is subjective for anyone to measure the level of success. One can define success as having five beemers in the garage. Another can define it as being a president of an organization. As for others, they might see it as having titles after their names.

Whether we could see the success itself now or later in the future, it depends on our struggle in life. If you want to have a career as a doctor, you have to work on it. If you want to have an unlimited account in the bank, you have to work for it. If you want to have any kinds of success in life, you have to fight for it. Life is not always a bed of roses. Like the old proverb says — there is a will, there is a way.
