25      Fly Me To The Moon

Taking a flight is like taking a pill, red or blue?

Since I was little, I have always been fascinated by aeroplanes. Whether it is a plain helicopter or big jet. I remember when I was little, my siblings and I used to run all the way to our front gate and climb it up just to see a plane flying over our house. Without a failure, every single time.

So you can imagine how psyched I was to take the first flight. Not only it was the first time, it was an overseas flight! I was so excited I did not even care it was a middle seat squeezed in between seven other seats in a row.

After years have gone by, flying is no longer a big whoop-tee-doo! So what if you can fly and get to Miami in an hour? So what if you can fly for sixteen hours straight from Singapore to Los Angeles? You are strapped for hours to your seat throughout the flight, for Christ’s sake!

But then, of course, there are plenty of interesting things about taking a flight. First, you have a chance to take a trip, a business trip even — at least you will be away from your everyday routine. Second, you never know what kind of boeing it will be, unless you check the flight info. Third, you are curious about the steward (if you are a female) and stewardess (if you are a male) — are they going to be attractive? Fourth, we are always intrigued by Airline food. Fifth, admit it, the airport security must excite you these days.

When there are pros, there must be cons. Before taking a flight, there is quite a list to check. Toiletries, attires, foot apparels, digital equipment, entertainment set and so on. Not to mention, if there are kids to tag along.

For big countries like the US, Europe or Australia, flying is no longer an option, it is a necessity. Business is done from the East to the West, from the North to the South. Distance is not an issue anymore and encountered easily by flying. People travel from one end to another. The fastest way for now is by air, not until a new technology for a rapid travel is invented.

Some of us travel by air to do business like the rest of us commute to work by public transportation. With so many airlines available, there is no way to avoid flying. One thing for sure wherever you go, whatever you do, ‘do as the Romans do’.

“So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane”
